Football fans were surprised when rookie Mac Jones won the New England Patriots‘ starting quarterback role over Cam Newton.

After all, Newton is a former NFL Most Valuable Player and has led a team to the Super Bowl.

But in 2021, head coach Bill Belichick saw that they were better off moving forward with the former Alabama standout.

Jones had better command of their offense and it showed during their training camp.

Credit that mastery of the playbook to his obsession with walking through the plays with his girlfriend.

It turned out that the Patriots made the right decision as they returned to the playoffs after a one-year absence.

Jones helped the six-time Super Bowl champions by throwing for 3,801 yards and 22 touchdowns.

However, he still has a lot to learn after the Patriots were decimated by the Buffalo Bills in their Wild Card encounter.

Going into year two, the Heisman Trophy finalist still has the same drive that enabled him to embrace the NFL style of play quickly.

For that reason, his teammates see great things in him.

Tight end Jonnu Smith said during his recent guesting on Good Morning Football, “The way he can turn it on. He’s one of the goofiest guys around. He has so much ability. So much dog in him. When he flips that switch, he’s a different person. That’s my guy.”

Two Sides Of Jones’ Personality

Having a funny bone helps defuse tension, especially during pressure-packed situations.

It must be his comical side that helped him calmly perform during the 2020 National Championship Game against Ohio State.

Cracking a joke or being goofy will help his teammates who are playing tightly to calm down.

But while he never forgets to have fun, he knows when it’s time for business.

No wonder he looked unfazed during his rookie season and he looked like a confident veteran.

With more experience, Jones should only get better.

That possibility has Patriots fans excited for the team’s future.
