The San Diego Padres are heading into the 2023 season with a lot to look forward to.
After all, they signed Xander Bogaerts, Matt Carpenter, Nelson Cruz, Seth Lugo, and Michael Wacha to bolster a club that already had stars such as Manny Machado, Juan Soto, Fernando Tatis Jr. Joe Musgrove, Josh Hader, and Yu Darvish.
But they may be forced to begin the season without one of those stars.
Today, the team received an unfortunate update on Musgrove.
The Padres ace suffered a fractured toe due to an accident in the weight room.
On Twitter, Bob Nightengale of USA Today had the news.

This is very bad news for the Padres.
Fortunately, it doesn’t have anything to do with his arm, but any time without Musgrove would be a huge setback for the team.
The Padres do still have Darvish, Wacha, and Blake Snell in their rotation.
They also have Lugo and Nick Martinez who could compete for a spot.
The Padres are lucky enough to have plenty of depth within the organization in terms of pitching and should be able to find somebody to fill the hole temporarily.
But losing Musgrove is a bad omen to start spring training and leaves them without their ace.
How long he’ll be out is undetermined at this point, but this will undoubtedly have an effect on the Padres as they look to piece together a rotation without their ace.NEXT: Stat Proves How Reliable Manny Machado Has Been
