Against all odds, the 89-win San Diego Padres defeated the 101-win New York Mets, 6-0, on Sunday to take the best-of-three Wild Card series played at Citi Field.
The game was 4-0 Padres in the top of the ninth inning, but a Juan Soto single with two runners in scoring position made it 6-0.
The Mets had shifted Soto, getting their third baseman closer to second base, and the talented slugger adjusted his swing to hit a soft ground ball near third base to score the two runs.
It was an impressive piece of hitting for the Padres’ star outfielder.
Padres fans in Citi Field started celebrating effusively after the two runs scored because it was close to a death sentence for the disappointing Mets.
“Padres family section goes crazy after Soto hit makes it 6-0!,” Padres Bally Sports broadcaster Bob Scanlan tweeted with a video of the celebration.

A Prime Opportunity For Revenge
The Padres are now in the National League Division Series, where they will face the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The budding rivalry has been fierce in recent seasons since the Padres have become more competitive, but the truth is that it still favors Los Angeles by a considerable margin.
The Dodgers eliminated the Padres in the 2020 postseason with a Division Round sweep; and they won the head-to-head matchup in 2021, 12-7, and contributed with the Padres missing the playoffs.
San Diego has a prime opportunity for revenge now.
Will their fans be celebrating next week?
It remains to be seem but they do have a very competitive team.
