Packers Not Concerned About Future Salary Cap Issues

Getting reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers back is a big deal for the Green Bay Packers.

Without him, it’s hard to see them competing, even if they re-sign Davante Adams to a long-term deal.

His presence gives them a chance to win, as it always has throughout his extensive career.

Likewise, they are better off having him until he retires because he’s showing no signs of slowing down for now.

However, retaining him comes with a hefty price tag that will have adverse effects in the near future, as NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero pointed out.

Still processing, but initial math says Aaron Rodgers' deal saves Green Bay about $18 million on the 2022 salary cap.

Pelissero tweeted, “Still processing, but initial math says Aaron Rodgers’ deal saves Green Bay about $18 million on the 2022 salary cap. Reminder: there is no cap magic, so this means big numbers are pushed into the future and would hit if/when Rodgers retires.”

Therefore, the Packers are making the most of Rodgers’ remaining years by pushing most of his three-year, $150 million contract extension down the road.

The cap savings they will have this season will give Green Bay the ability to get their top players back like Adams and De’Vondre Campbell.

But as time goes by, the Packers will feel the weight of Rodgers’ deal, even if he’s not playing anymore.

When that time comes, the team will be in rebuild mode with limited cap room because of Rodgers’ cap hit.

Particulars Of Rodgers’ New Deal

Pelissero quoted his tweet which says “On the first read of #Packers QB Aaron Rodgers’ new contract, he gets: $42 million in 2022, $59.515M in 2023, $49.3M in 2024. So that’s $150.815M over the next three years, and the first two are fully guaranteed at signing.”

However, Rodgers deserves to become the highest-paid player in terms of annual average value because of his consecutive MVPs.

Green Bay is fully aware of the consequences of giving him such a deal, but the rewards outweigh the risks for now.
