It’s hard to look at the Baltimore Orioles and see anything but a team at the bottom of the pack in the American League East division.
That’s where they are of course, sitting 19 games back of the New York Yankees, who own baseball’s best record to date.
The Orioles themselves own a record of 27-36, so there hasn’t been much to cheer about.
But they have taken a few incremental steps forward as of late, as one Orioles fan points out on Twitter.
At a certain point in the 2021 season, the Orioles owned a 27-57 record.
That’s 30 games below the .500 mark.
Now, they sit just nine games under the .500 mark, which still isn’t great, but it is when compared to where they were at this point last season with the same number of wins.
The Orioles are now 27-36.

Baby Steps
At least the Orioles are now showing a little incremental progress.
It’s better than nothing.
It’s been since 2016 that this team reached the postseason.
That year, they were knocked out in the AL Wild Card Game by the Toronto Blue Jays.
But speaking of the Wild Card, there is an extra spot available in both leagues, meaning that now, instead of 10 teams making the postseason, there will be 12 teams, with six per league.
The Orioles aren’t a team that you’d look at as a contender, but with so much time still left in the season, they are only 6.5 games back of the Boston Red Sox for the third Wild Card spot.
Perhaps that could spur them to make a few moves at the trade deadline and try to go for one of those final spots.
You never know in baseball, especially now with the extra Wild Card spot.
