Pittsburgh Pirates top prospect Oneil Cruz made his long-awaited 2022 debut on Monday night as the Bucs played host to their NL Central division rivals, the Chicago Cubs.

Pittsburgh won 12-1, with Cruz picking up his two hits and driving in four runs for the Bucs.

Just three innings into his debut, he had registered the fastest sprint speeds of any Pirates player this season, the hardest throw by any infielder in baseball, and the hardest hit ball by any Pirates player in 2022.

Cruz was asked a question last night about whether or not he was trying to break Statcast, and Pirates insider Jason Mackey tweeted what Cruz’s response was, and it was quite hilarious.

Oneil Cruz, asked if he’s trying to break Statcast: “Whatever is gonna get broken, is gonna get broken.”

Will Statcast Be Broken?

For those who don’t know, Statcast is a tool used by Major League Baseball to measure things such as exit velocity, pitch speeds, launch angle, and other important stats.

Cruz might just be the one to break Statcast.

Who’s going to stop him is the question.

But his response is quite perfect.

Whatever is meant to be broken will be broken, whether it’s a record or even Statcast.

This quote is confusing, but it does have quite a clear meaning.

Cruz is an exciting young prospect who has an incredibly bright future.

He could end up being one of the key pieces for the Pirates going forward as they continue their rebuild.

Perhaps he could be a key part of the next great team in the Steel City.

Either way, he plans on breaking some records, and he might even break Statcast along the way.

We’ll see what is in store for this exciting young prospect as his career progresses.
