The New York Giants have high hopes after hiring head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen.
The team hopes that they can bring some magic from the Buffalo Bills to end their five-year playoff drought.
As Schoen tries to clean up Dave Gettleman’s mess, Daboll will impart his offensive mind to an offense that ranked 31st in total yards and points scored per game last season.
However, as NFL columnist Pat Leonard shared, things are not off to a good start.
Giants HC Brian Daboll says Kadarius Toney is not here at voluntary pre-draft minicamp. Says Toney hasn’t received the playbook yet, because they haven’t done anything virtual. Daboll is careful to remind this is a voluntary camp. But given Toney’s history, this is noteworthy. pic.twitter.com/yVnYpd7S92

Leonard tweeted, “Giants HC Brian Daboll says Kadarius Toney is not here at voluntary pre-draft minicamp. Says Toney hasn’t received the playbook yet, because they haven’t done anything virtual. Daboll is careful to remind this is a voluntary camp. But given Toney’s history, this is noteworthy.”
A Disturbing Trend For Toney
There’s a lot to unpack from that update.
First, Toney isn’t obligated to attend because it’s a voluntary team activity.
It’s also fascinating that the wide receiver does not have a copy of the playbook yet.
If they’re not doing things virtually, don’t they have the resources to send him a copy at his residence?
Likewise, Toney also missed last season’s offseason workout program because he hadn’t signed his contract yet.
Is Toney setting a trend?
It’s not good, though, especially after not having a touchdown catch in ten games played during his rookie year.
Even without a playbook, Toney should have the initiative to be there at the workouts.
If he’s still nursing a shoulder injury, he could still run some drills with the team.
Besides, he must also take every opportunity to learn Daboll’s system.
With his career starting slowly, he needs to do a lot to bounce back and repay the trust the Giants gave him.
