The Washington Football Team is set to announce its new name on February 2.
Well, that is when the team is officially going to reveal the name.
Franchise legend Joe Theismann may have already revealed the new name to be the Commanders.

NFL World Reacts To New Washington Name
It should be pointed out that the organization has not announced Commanders as the name.
But Theismann seemed pretty sure about it and that has the NFL world reacting to the spoiler.
The Washington Commanders?! Really. Lol.

If Washington's new moniker is Commanders, I wish they'd just stay the #WashingtonFootball team. https://t.co/hYTCqhOKvK

There seems to be a growing sentiment that sticking with Football Team would not be the worst option.
Yet that was always a placeholder, even if it started to catch on.
The franchise wants to have a name they can market and a cool new logo they can put on clothing and hats.
Commanders isn't terrible.
We'll get over it.
Just win some games.Go Commanders#WashingtonFootball #FirstWorldProblems

There is always going to be backlash when a team changes its name.
Washington just has the unfortunate luck of doing this for a second time in the span of a few years.
A more proactive approach the first time around would have avoided this situation entirely.
Fans are just going to have to accept whatever the name is, whether it is Commanders or something else.
The team winning games and getting into the postseason on a regular basis should wipe away any lingering complaints after the inaugural season with yet another new name.
The reception on Wednesday to commanders won’t be that bad since we’ve gotten clues over the past month and got used to it. That’s why they “leaked” it.

Wednesday is the day the new name becomes official.
But if Theismann is right, the fanfare of a surprise is already gone.
Perhaps that was done on purpose so the outrage can get out of the way now.
