The San Francisco 49ers made another huge hire to their coaching staff.
After losing their defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans to the Houston Texans, the Niners need a new DC.
Luckily for them, former Carolina Panthers interim coach Steve Wilks was available.
Wilks has been a good DC in the NFL for a long time.
So it is no surprise the 49ers were interested once they found out his contract in Carolina would not be renewed.
Fans around the league recognize the 49ers made a great move.
The 49ers know a great coach when they see one.

As with most 49ers assistants, Wilks has a chance to land a head coaching gig next offseason.
Both Ryans and Robert Saleh landed head coaching jobs after being the defensive coordinator for the 49ers.
He will be a head coach in the next offseason cycle. Guy somehow managed to get the Panthers to 6-6 with Baker and Darnold, running a team where he didn't build the staff/strategy. He will be a great HC when given a proper shot.

Even Carolina Panthers fans are happy for Wilks to get this opportunity in San Francisco.
He did a great job as interim head coach last season, leading the Panthers to a 6-6 record in 12 games.
He was even in consideration to get the job this offseason before they went with Frank Reich.
Best possible situation for him! glad he’s got an opportunity, good luck SW

It looks the 49ers’ defense will not miss a beat with Wilks next season.
He has been a very good defensive coordinator in a few different places.
Also, he might have the most talent in San Francisco than he has had anywhere.
Very good hire. A man who has a record of commanding respect in the locker room. Leadership. Can free up Kyle to focus on the QB question. pic.twitter.com/mxEr99Ioy9

It will be interesting to see how Wilks does in his first year with the 49ers.
San Francisco will enter next season as one of the favorites to win the NFC.
Their defense, led by Wilks, will be a big reason for any success they have in 2023.
