The Arizona Cardinals have become the final team to hire their next head coach.
It seemed like the Cardinals were closing in on one of the Super Bowl assistant coaches.
That was Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon.
Despite Gannon’s defense getting torched in the Super Bowl, the Cardinals still felt confident in hiring him.
Even though his last game was bad, the Eagles did have one of the best defenses in the NFL this season.
Gannon's Eagles defense ranked 6th in total DVOA and 8th in allowed points per game (20.2)
While Gannon is coming off a poor defensive game in the SB, he still had a good season. Philly reportedly tried to get him to stay.

The Cardinals need help all over their roster.
As you can see their defense was ranked 31st in the NFL last season, and they play in a tough NFC West.
One of the first things Gannon will have to secure is a good relationship with Kyler Murray.
As the Cardinals quarterback, there have been times when Murray seems like a lot to handle.
Also, his work ethic has been brought into question on different occasions.
Finding a good offensive coordinator that can bring the best out of Murray is crucial.
But, as a defensive coach, Gannon seems to impress many people around the league.
JG is as impressive as it gets in production meetings.
I could tell about 5 minutes into the first one that he would be a head coach. And soon.

But, many Eagles fans seem happy to let Arizona take Gannon.
They have been critical of him plenty this season, and he has become the fall-man for that brutal loss.
I can assure you, no one in Philly is saying Arizona should back off on hiring Gannon!!!

It will be interesting to see where the Eagles look now for their defensive coordinator.
But, sometimes the grass is not greener on the other side.
It might be hard for the Eagles to replicate the defensive success they had in 2022 with a different DC.
Either way, the Cardinals seem happy with the hire of Gannon, and he will have his work cut out for him.
