NFL Network national insider Ian Rapoport tweeted, “Free agent RB Sony Michel is flying to Los Angeles for a meeting with the #Chargers today, sources say. A surprise release by the #Dolphins, Michel could find work quickly for a team that has looked to bolster its RB room.”
With him out of Miami, the Dolphins will be carrying Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert, Myles Gaskin, and Salvon Ahmed at running back.
Meanwhile, the Chargers could use some help after Austin Ekeler and Michel could leapfrog Joshua Kelly, Isaiah Spiller, and Larry Rountree III on the depth chart.
It’s also surprising that the Los Angeles Rams did not bring him back after a season with 845 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Therefore, Michel was expected to be a steady contributor for the Dolphins in the upcoming season.
However, head coach Mike McDaniel went elsewhere.
Signing the four-year veteran will add another dimension to the Chargers offense that already has Ekeler, Mike Williams, Keenan Allen, and Justin Herbert.
A Quick Glance At Michel’s NFL Career
He was chosen by the New England Patriots in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft and won Super Bowl LIII in his rookie season.
He stayed in New England for two more seasons before getting traded to the Rams.
It was a move that enabled him to win a second Super Bowl ring.
After that season, the Dolphins signed him, but he became a casualty on roster cutdown day.
The Chargers could provide the opportunity for him to continue his NFL story.
As of the 2021 season, he has 18 touchdowns from 3,137 rushing yards.
Michel also has 47 receptions for 386 yards and two touchdowns.
