Lost in the recent success of the Dallas Cowboys is the thumb injury of quarterback Dak Prescott.
After a successful surgery, his recovery period was initially set at 6-8 weeks.
Then, it was reduced to 4-6 weeks, given his fast healing.
Likewise, the Cowboys did not place him on injured reserve, thinking he will return within four weeks after their season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
NFL Network national insider Ian Rapoport has an update on the two-time Pro Bowler.
#Cowboys QB Dak Prescott is not expected to practice today, having just gotten his stitches out of his surgically repaired thumb. This week appears too ambitious though he does have an outside shot for next week vs. the #Rams.

Rapoport tweeted, “#Cowboys QB Dak Prescott is not expected to practice today, having just gotten his stitches out of his surgically repaired thumb. This week appears too ambitious though he does have an outside shot for next week vs. the #Rams.”
Therefore, Prescott could be out for two more weeks, giving backup Cooper Rush more playing time.
However, Rush is providing a welcome distraction from Prescott’s injury after winning his two starts this season.
He threw for 450 yards and two touchdowns in their victories against the Cincinnati Bengals and the New York Giants.
Rush has also improved his record as a starter to 3-0.
A Quarterback Duel Brewing For The Cowboys?
Rush’s heads-up play might be detrimental to Prescott’s chances to take his role back.
After Prescott’s injury, Cowboys team owner and general manager Jerry Jones threw his support around Rush.
However, it was difficult to see success in a quarterback that played only ten games in five seasons.
Two games later, Jones looks like a prophet as Rush fulfilled his part to keep their winning hopes afloat.
With Prescott still on the mend, Rush has more opportunities to prove that he could be more than a backup.
When that happens, the Cowboys will have a happy problem at hand with two able players behind center.
