The Philadelphia Eagles are not yet done building their roster for the 2022 season after trading for safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.
He spent his first four seasons with the New Orleans Saints and was the team’s starting safety coming into 2021.
A year later, contract extension talks between both parties fizzled.
That’s where the Eagles swoop in to add another starter in their secondary.
ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter revealed the full terms of the Gardner-Johnson trade to Philadelphia.
Full trade terms:
🏈Eagles receive safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and Saints’ 7th-round pick in 2025.
🏈Saints receive the Eagles’ 5th-round pick in 2023 and the worse of their two 6th-round picks in 2024.

He tweeted, “Full trade terms: Eagles receive safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and Saints’ 7th-round pick in 2025. Saints receive the Eagles’ 5th-round pick in 2023 and the worse of their two 6th-round picks in 2024.”
With Gardner-Johnson switching teams, the Saints still have a respectable secondary with cornerbacks Paulson Adebo and Marshon Lattimore lining up with safeties Marcus Maye and Tyrann Mathieu.
The Saints also gave Mathieu a three-year, $33 million contract.
On the other hand, the Eagles will be getting a starter alongside Marcus Epps.
The Eagles also signed Pro Bowl cornerback James Bradberry to line up opposite All-Pro Darius Slay.
Philadelphia’s stacked defense also includes sack specialist Haason Reddick, Kyzir White, Josh Sweat, and Fletcher Cox.
Gardner-Johnson will be playing the final year of his four-year, $3.3 million rookie deal in 2022.
Saints and Eagles Become Trade Partners Again
Before the 2022 NFL Draft, the Saints and Eagles finalized a trade that would help their future prospects.
The Eagles gave up two 2022 first-rounders and a 2022 sixth-rounder.
Meanwhile, the Saints sent their 2022 first, third, and seventh-rounders, a 2023 second-rounder, and 2024 third-rounder.
Through that trade, the Saints were able to trade up to number 11 to select wide receiver Chris Olave.
On the other hand, the Eagles get an extra first-rounder in the next draft wherein better quarterback talent might be available.
