It’s no secret that the Carolina Panthers are seeking a new starting quarterback.
The Sam Darnold experiment imploded after a strong start.
The former USC standout couldn’t carry the team without star running back Christian McCaffrey.
If he is the quarterback they need, he should allow them to win even if the key players around him are not there.
Therefore, the Panthers have seemingly decided to bring in another option under center.
Unfortunately, as NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport shared, it’s unclear who will be their man.
The #Panthers are not expected to trade for #Browns QB Baker Mayfield prior to the first round of the NFL Draft, sources say, if they do it at all. Thursday has to play out first, before any other options are considered. Carolina picks No. 6.

Rapoport tweeted, “The #Panthers are not expected to trade for #Browns QB Baker Mayfield prior to the first round of the NFL Draft, sources say, if they do it at all. Thursday has to play out first, before any other options are considered. Carolina picks No. 6.”
While their actions remain uncertain, it’s clear that that team would like to see how round one will unfold.
Perhaps they already have a prospect in mind and believe they could get him at a later round.
After all, there’s a consensus that the 2022 quarterback class is underwhelming.
Options For The Panthers
In that case, there’s a chance that Carolina won’t draft a quarterback at number six.
They could go for an offensive lineman, given they have a great need at that spot.
Likewise, they might also trade down to get an extra pick.
Either way, the odds of drafting a play-caller aren’t high.
Also, the Panthers could push for a Mayfield trade if they think he’s the best option.
However, how likely will it be that Carolina would give him a long-term extension?
In that case, he’s looking like a one-year rental as the Panthers re-engage with a more promising 2023 quarterback class.
