Will Jimmy Garoppolo become an expensive backup quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers?
Aside from going all-in on second-year player Trey Lance, Garoppolo remains on the team’s roster despite attempts to trade him.
He did not really perform exceptionally well during last season’s playoffs even if the 49ers made it to the NFC Championship Game.
His shoulder injury might have limited his performance and it’s also costing San Francisco the chance to get him off their books.
Teams wouldn’t want to trade for a quarterback who has issues with one of the most important body parts for his job.
Sadly, it’s difficult to see a trade partner for the Niners after the 2022 NFL Draft and after the Carolina Panthers traded for Baker Mayfield.
Therefore, the team should accept the reality that they will have to absorb his $24.2 million salary for 2022.
Aside from his trade market drying up, he’s not up to full strength as NFL Network national insider Ian Rapoport revealed.
Jimmy G has been throwing for several weeks. The focus will be not on making one deep throw but on making many in a row to hold up to the rigors of a game or in a practice. That's what full clearance would mean. The belief is the cuff will end up stronger than before. https://t.co/n1tySCgSEm

More Updates On Garoppolo’s Progress
In an earlier post, Rapoport said, “QB Jimmy Garoppolo recently saw Dr. Neal ElAttrache for a checkup and is progressing well. SF is thrilled with where he is physically, sources say. The expectation is he’ll be fully cleared around mid-August. Perhaps then we’ll know his destination.”
Rapoport speculated that it’s difficult to see Garoppolo switching teams until he gets a clean bill of health.
That result should take a while and he would have to ride San Francisco’s bench until it happens.
