As the NFL offseason switches to mandatory minicamps, Baker Mayfield is still with the Cleveland Browns.
The team has tried several times to move his contract by finding a trade partner.
But after the draft and the voluntary OTAs, the 2017 Heisman Trophy winner still has zero takers.
Once the team’s undisputed starter, that role was gone when the Browns acquired Deshaun Watson on a five-year, $230 million deal.
Therefore, it wouldn’t make sense to have Mayfield as a backup, leading them to still look for trade opportunities.
That said, CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones revealed that the Browns might have a lead.
As minicamps begin today for the Browns and Panthers, trade talks between the teams continue surrounding QB Baker Mayfield, per sources. The main issue remains Mayfield's salary and how much (or how little) teams pay.

Jones tweeted, “As minicamps begin today for the Browns and Panthers, trade talks between the teams continue surrounding QB Baker Mayfield, per sources. The main issue remains Mayfield’s salary and how much (or how little) teams pay.”
He added, “There’s urgency on Carolina’s side to execute the deal soon so Mayfield can get some time in minicamp with the Panthers. For the Browns, it’s the best offer they have. Talks ongoing.”
Mayfield To The Panthers Makes Sense
It’s the only deal that works for both parties because other NFL teams have solid options under center.
The urgency for the Panthers makes sense because having Sam Darnold again doesn’t spark enthusiasm.
Mayfield knows what it’s like to play with a dominant running back.
Therefore, he will find a way to activate Christian McCaffrey if they will have a chance to play together.
Meanwhile, the Browns get to offload his contract worth $18.8 million and give him a fresh start.
With both sides being serious participants, this deal should get done soon.
However, the Browns might want to hold onto Mayfield for now because Watson could be in for a long suspension due to sexual misconduct allegations.
