The Carolina Panthers, along with Baker Mayfield, agreed earlier this morning that they would part ways.
Although the details of this release were initially unknown, additional information has just been unveiled.
Details on the Baker Mayfield release:
— He asked for it and the #Panthers agreed.
— This locks in the 5th rounder in the trade with the #Browns, rather than the 4th rounder.
— PJ Walker expected to be the Panthers backup.— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) December 5, 2022
In the initial trade with the Cleveland Browns, the Panthers had agreed that if Mayfield played more than 70% of the team’s snaps, their fifth-round pick would turn into a fourth.
With this release, the Browns only get a fifth-round pick.
What’s Next For The Panthers?
Mayfield played in seven total games for the Panthers, totaling 1,313 yards, completing just 57.8% of passes, and throwing an equal amount of interceptions and touchdowns, with six apiece.
In their last game, it was Sam Darnold at the helm for the Panthers.
Darnold and the Panthers won this game, which was against the Denver Broncos.
Darnold was 11-19 on the game, throwing for 164 yards and one touchdown.
It is presumed that he will be the starter, and former XFL star P.J. Walker will be the backup for the remainder of the season.
As it currently stands through 13 weeks, the Panthers are 4-8 and are tied for last place in the NFC South.
Looking ahead to next season, the Panthers hold their own first and second-round picks, and they also hold the San Francisco 49ers’ second-round pick.
They will have a great opportunity for a top-five pick in this draft and will have three picks in the first 64 of the draft.
Will the Panthers rebuild, with the opportunity to draft their future franchise quarterback?
We will soon see what they decide to do with their three picks next year.
