Not so long ago, NFL scouts debated whether Marcus Mariota or Jameis Winston would have the better career.
Some predicted that it could mark the start of a new era in the league, the dawn of a new rivalry that would keep us all entertained for years to come.
Fast forward to today, and the only rivalry between those two could come down to who’s going to be out of the league first, and it seems like Mariota is one step ahead of his colleague right now.
Unsurprisingly, the Atlanta Falcons released the former second-overall pick, saving $12 million in cap space, according to NFL insider Adam Schefter.

Needless to say, some Falcons fans actually met the news with grace, as Mariota was mostly bad in his lone season with the team before being benched and bailing on the franchise later in the season.
Guy’s greatest claim to fame was a touchdown pass to himself verses the Chiefs. 😣

Marcus’ career never actually took off, losing his starting job to Ryan Tannehill in Tennesee before serving as Derek Carr’s backup with the Las Vegas Raiders.
He failed to impress in his brief tenure in Georgia, and he might never be a starter in the NFL again.
The Falcons will now either look for an upgrade via the Draft, a trade, or free agency, or they could even try and give Desmond Ridder another shot to lead the way.
But the early results weren’t exactly great, and there were always doubts about Ridder’s potential as an NFL-caliber player.
This is not an exciting time to be a Falcons fan by any means.NEXT: NFL Insider Says Falcons Will Have Interest In 1 Star QB If Available
