After the conclusion of last night’s Super Bowl, Patrick Mahomes was named the MVP.
He got to that position through a strong offensive line, great routes run by his receivers, and of course, strong coaching by Andy Reid.
Although the Kansas City Chiefs ended up winning this game, some believe that Mahomes wasn’t worthy of this accolade.
The two best individual performances from Super Bowl LVII:
1. Andy Reid
2. Jalen Hurts— Jordan Raanan (@JordanRaanan) February 13, 2023
Jordan Raanan is a reporter covering the New York Giants, who are in a division with the Philadelphia Eagles.
He contends that two of the best performances last night were from Andy Reid and Jalen Hurts, not Mahomes.
Hurts finished the game with 304 passing yards, 70 rushing yards, and four total touchdowns.
Mahomes finished the game with 182 passing yards, 44 rushing yards, and three total touchdowns.
On paper, it does appear that Hurts was significantly better, gaining over 100 more yards, and one additional touchdown over Mahomes.
Hurts did have an untimely fumble in the first half which resulted in a Chiefs touchdown, which could have discredited him from the MVP award.
This swung the momentum back in the Chiefs’ favor, allowing them to avoid falling too far behind.
In NFL history, there has been just one player to win the Super Bowl MVP who was on the losing roster.
That was Chuck Howley, who played for the Dallas Cowboys.
In a hard-fought game against the Baltimore Colts, Howley had two interceptions and a forced fumble, leading to the crowning of the MVP award.
Will another member of the losing team ever win Super Bowl MVP ever again?
