It’s hard to believe that the Houston Texans were playoff fixtures not too long ago.
They’ve also won a bunch of division titles and had great players like J.J. Watt, DeAndre Hopkins, and Deshaun Watson.
Watson is still with the team but might be on the way out depending on how the NFL offseason and his legal issues will unfold.
Hopkins and Watt are with the Arizona Cardinals.
It can be argued that the questionable deal that sent Hopkins to Arizona for meager returns started the team’s downfall.
Aside from Watt, they’ve also had a recent fire sale of some key players like Zach Cunningham and Whitney Mercilus.
The team itself and the front office are both in dysfunction, leaving no end in sight for their struggles.
However, NBC Sports’ NFL insider Warren Sharp shared a significant reason for the Texans’ demise.
the Houston Texans 1st & 2nd round picks the last 5 years
2018 1st: —
2018 2nd: —
2019 1st: Tytus Howard
2019 2nd: Lonnie Johnson Jr
2019 2nd: Max Scharping
2020 1st: —
2020 2nd: Ross Blacklock
2021 1st: —
2021 2nd: —
2022 1st: tbd
2022 2nd: tbd— Warren Sharp (@SharpFootball) February 24, 2022
In his tweet above, Sharp laid out the team’s first and second-round choices since 2018.
Of the nine picks they’ve had since 2018, they’ve only used four and they’ve drafted largely unknowns.
They did not have their first-rounders in 2018, 2020, and 2021, plus second-rounders for 2018 and 2021.
Worst, Tytus Howard, Lonnie Johnson Jr., Max Scharping, and Ross Blacklock have barely made an impact on their cause.
When Will The Texans’ Misery End?
Unfortunately, it seems like the light at the end of the tunnel is not yet visible for the Texans.
They hope that Lovie Smith could turn things around as he did with the Chicago Bears more than a decade ago.
However, their front office has much work to do in building their roster.
Even if Smith made the Super Bowl once, the Texans’ mess might be huge for him.
Aside from starting to get smarter in the draft, they must also make sound choices in free agency.
