The Carolina Panthers haven’t done much to address their concerns at quarterback.
For now, Sam Darnold is their starter due to the process of elimination.
They haven’t decided to bring back former league MVP Cam Newton and P.J. Walker hasn’t shown that he can carry the franchise.
The Panthers drafted Ole Miss’ Matt Corral in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft
However, the jury is still out on whether will be the savior that the team seeks.
There have been reports about the Panthers trading for former Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield.
The Cleveland Browns are trying to get him off their books after signing Deshaun Watson to a five-year, $230 million fully-guaranteed contract.
But NFL analyst Ryan McCrystal thinks that the trade wouldn’t do much for the Panthers.
Panthers pursuit of Mayfield makes no sense at this point. If you’re done with Darnold, give Corral a shot and see what you’ve got. You’re bad either way. This is why lame duck coaches are dangerous.

He tweeted, “Panthers pursuit of Mayfield makes no sense at this point. If you’re done with Darnold, give Corral a shot and see what you’ve got. You’re bad either way. This is why lame-duck coaches are dangerous.’
He does have a point because does Mayfield give them a significant boost?
Will Mayfield help them overcome division rivals in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints, and Atlanta Falcons?
They might have a shot against the Falcons, but it would take more than Mayfield to defeat the Saints and the Buccaneers.
Panthers Are Better Off Embracing Growing Pains
It might take time before Corral turns into a dependable quarterback.
In contrast, he could tear up the league and make the Panthers a competitive squad.
Either way, it’s hard to see them clinching a playoff spot in the NFC.
However, it would be better to give Corral confidence even if they pile up the losses.
It’s not a luxury that any NFL team can afford but he will become better by learning from his mistakes.
After all, Mayfield might not even fit what they are trying to achieve.
