For months in late 2021 and early 2022, the MLB Players Association, or MLBPA, made lots of headlines: they were negotiating the new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with the league during the lockout.
After several threats and false promises, the two parties were able to negotiate a deal that didn’t compromise the full 162 games.
To do that, the MLBPA executive subcommittee was crucial.
They are the players in charge of making tough decisions, and whose vote carries the most weight.
Max Scherzer, Andrew Miller, Jason Castro, Zack Britton, James Paxton, Gerrit Cole, Marcus Semien and Francisco Lindor were the eight players in MLBPA’s executive subcommittee, working together with leader Tony Clark.
According to The Athletic’s Evan Drellich, a new executive subcommittee has been voted on to make these decisions from now on.
“News: A new MLBPA executive subcommittee has been voted on. Marcus Semien and Francisco Lindor are holdovers. Jack Flaherty, Lance McCullers Jr., Ian Happ, Austin Slater, Lucas Giolito and Brent Suter are new faces. Exiting: Scherzer, Miller, Castro, Britton, Paxton, Cole,” he tweeted.

Two Players Remain In The Subcommittee, With Six New Faces
Lindor and Semien are the remaining players in the subcommittee: everyone else is no longer part of it.
Instead, some new faces are entering the equation.
Drellich explains in a subsequent tweet that the subcommittee terms last two years, and that the vote came on Monday in Arizona during the MLBPA’s annual meetings.
It’s certainly a new challenge for the six new players in charge of occupying their positions as executive subcommittee members.
We saw their importance during the 2022 CBA negotiations with the league.
They will be tasked with looking out for the players’ best interests.
