For all of the question marks surrounding the New York Yankees and their starting rotation entering the 2022 season, lefty Nestor Cortes is proving to be a pillar of stability, having emerged as an unlikely ace in the midst of the Yanks’ recent surge atop the standings in the AL East.
On Sunday afternoon, the Yankees wrapped up their three-game weekend set against the Chicago White Sox and turned to Cortes to try and secure the series win.
All Cortes did was pitch eight innings of one-run ball as the Yankees cruised to a 5-1 victory.
Cortes continues to chase history, and a Yankees statistics Twitter page posted about his recent accomplishment.
Cortes’ three runs allowed in his previous 16 starts ties the second longest streak by a Yankees pitcher.
Nestor Cortes has allowed 3 runs or fewer in 16 consecutive starts, tied for the second longest streak in Yankees history.
The only Yankee starter with a longer streak is Russ Ford (20 games in 1910-11).

Nasty Nestor Does It Again
When you think of the Yankees’ ace, you first think of Gerrit Cole.
But you can’t sleep on Cortes.
This guy is an animal and has emerged as one of the top pitchers in all of baseball.
The 27-year-old is 2-1 with a 1.35 ERA in seven starts this season.
He is quickly proving his worth and showing the entire baseball world what he is capable of.
This guy can pitch and is a key piece for the future of this Yankees ballclub.
Cortes allowed just three hits in his dominant outing yesterday against the White Sox.
Now, Cortes has the best ERA in the American League, as he sits just above Justin Verlander.
Cortes has electric stuff and knows what it takes to be successful at the Major League level.
We’ll see if he’s got more in him as the season progresses.
He’s now one of the most exciting young pitchers in all of baseball and has great potential.
