The NBA world is once again talking about Ben Simmons of the Brooklyn Nets.
And, once again, the hot takes are flying.
The latest news says that Simmons will miss several months of rehabbing because he has to undergo surgery to fix a back issue that’s been nagging him.
He will be back before training camp and is still set to be with the Nets when the new season begins but this news is still generating a lot of questions and opinions.
For months now, people have said that Simmons’ heart wasn’t in the game.
He wasn’t a team player, they said, and that’s why he was on the bench.
I’m not a doctor, but if Ben Simmons needs back surgery, it seems like a lot of people probably owe him an apology?

However, as Gerald Bourguet points out, if Simmons really does have an injury serious enough for surgery, doesn’t that mean he truly was in pain and not able to play?
Does that mean that all the detractors owe him an apology?
The Simmons Saga
It looks like Simmons really does have some health issues that need addressing, hence the surgery.
Therefore, people should give the man some grace.
However, Simmons’ actions have led to this point.
He refused to play for his Philadelphia 76ers team for months.
Although he cited mental health issues as the cause, there were quite a few that speculated he just didn’t want to play after a very bad postseason.
There were multiple reports of him sitting out of practices and not working with his team and generally having a bad demeanor.
Plus, the mental health excuse was revealed after weeks and weeks of not playing which only made people suspicious.
All in all, Simmons hasn’t handled any of this very well and has created an atmosphere that makes him look very bad.
However, he can still turn it around if he returns and helps the Nets win.
