Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant spent months talking about teaming up and ‘ruling the Eastern Conference’ and then signed with the Brooklyn Nets.
Three years later, we now know that they weren’t even able to make the Eastern Conference Finals, let alone pursue the first NBA championship in franchise history.
Durant and Irving stood by each other while they could, but they also pursued their way out of the team as soon as they had a chance.
First, it was KD requesting a trade in the offseason, and then Kyrie forcing his way out mid-season.
Irving’s trade request reportedly blindsided Durant, who always had his back when he was rightfully criticized.
However, it seems like these two aren’t ready to give up on their dream of winning a championship together.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, their bromance is far from over, and they could revisit the possibility of teaming up with the Suns next summer:
“Let me point out that Kyrie and James Harden are free agents in the summer. If you think this is over, it ain’t over. Kyrie really was interested in being in Phoenix, so just start thinking about that,” Windhorst said.
Kyrie will be an unrestricted free agent, and the Suns were reportedly concerned about Chris Paul’s age, health, and play this season.
Now, whether the Suns’ new ownership and GM James Jones will even consider hiring one of the most toxic and trouble-making players in professional sports history that’s a whole different story.
Kyrie was also reportedly looking forward to a reunion with LeBron James in the Los Angeles Lakers, so that will also be a possibility to keep an eye on.
Whatever the case, it all points to the Dallas Mavericks giving up valuable assets for a rental on a guy that never actually wanted to be there.
