The NBA could be getting bigger sooner than expected.
We have heard talk of the league expanding for a few years now, with the most likely locations being Seattle, Washington and Las Vegas, Nevada.
Both of those cities have been eager to host teams – especially Seattle, who lost their beloved SuperSonics more than ten years ago.
The concept of the NBA expanding is not a matter of if but when.
Well, it could be fairly soon.
I'm not going to get my hopes up yet, but expansion is coming sooner or later for the NBA. It's definitely time.
I'm curious to see how the league restructures conferences, divisions and the schedule when they do expand. As is, one West team would move East if SEA and LV come in. https://t.co/EJ6LzL3iZP— Keith Smith (@KeithSmithNBA) September 7, 2022
A now-deleted tweet from Willie Ramirez of the AP said that the league was thinking of announcing a future expansion to both Seattle and Las Vegas during this upcoming preseason.
That would make perfect sense because, as luck would have it, some preseason games will be played in both of those cities.
We don’t know if Adam Silver will really announce the much-hyped expansion this year or not but everyone feels that it’s definitely coming.
NBA insider Keith Smith said, “I’m curious to see how the league restructures conferences, division, and the schedule when they do expand.”
He noted, “As is, one West team would move East if SEA and LV come in.”
He’s got a point: this expansion would really change the entire NBA.
Bigger, Better NBA
The idea of teams in both Seattle and Las Vegas is very thrilling but it would cause quite a few alterations elsewhere.
Obviously, the league couldn’t add two new teams to the Western Conference without making a few tweaks to the East.
You can’t have more teams in the West than the East so a team would have to shift.
There are a couple of suitable candidates – namely the New Orleans Pelicans and Memphis Grizzlies – but we don’t know what the league will decide.
Changes are coming for the NBA and we are all eagerly awaiting them.
