The San Diego Padres are coming off a successful season that saw them make the NLCS.
But, after losing in five games to the Phillies, the Padres’ storybook playoff run ended sooner than they would have liked.
San Diego showed they were willing to go all-in at the trade deadline.
Now, it is time to see if they will go all-in with free agency.
Here are two moves the Padres should make this offseason.
1. Sign A Power Bat
The Padres are set to lose a few key contributors to free agency.
Including two players they acquired at the trade deadline in Josh Bell and Brandon Drury.
Now the Padres need to add another big bat behind Juan Soto, Manny Machado, and eventually Fernando Tatis Jr.
One interesting name to consider is Jose Abreu.
The 1B market for the #Padres #Astros and #Rays are now headlined by the followingfree agents:
Josh Bell, Jose Abreu, Wil Myers, Brandon Belt, Yuli Gurriel, Carlos Santana, Miguel San, Jesus Aguilar & Yoshi Tsutsugo #1B— Jim Bowden⚾️🏈 (@JimBowdenGM) November 15, 2022
The 35-year-old first baseman has always been elite at driving in runs.
Of his eight seasons where he has played over 100 games, Abreu has driven in over 100 runs in six of them.
He can help fill the void at first base and bat behind some of the best players in the National League.
2. Add Another Starting Pitcher
San Diego has already addressed their bullpen in free agency by re-signing Robert Suarez and Nick Martinez.
Now it is time for them to address starting pitching.
The Padres are set to lose Sean Manaea and Mike Clevinger.
So, some back-end starters would be a nice addition.
Two righties the Padres could be interested in are Nathan Eovaldi and Jameson Taillon.
In addition, Jose Quintana would be a great left-handed pitcher for San Diego to target.
