For as long as we remember, reaching 3,000 hits has been the ultimate hitting milestone.
Think about it: just 33 MLB hitters have accumulated 3,000 hits or more throughout history.
You may not believe it, but the 2,000-hit milestone is also very important and very cool to reach.
Only 292 MLB batters have reached the 2,000-hit threshold, which is a tiny percentage of the thousands of players that have ever donned an MLB uniform.
Three stars currently are trying to get to 2,000 hits and will likely do it in 2023: Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen, Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman, and Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve.

McCutchen has 1,948 hits and will likely reach 2,000 this year: the Pirates signed him to a short-term contract, likely to retire in the city that saw him become one of MLB’s brightest stars.
Altuve, barring injury, will reach the number with no issues: in fact, he has a slight shot to, one day, get to 3,000.
Freeman will also get to 2,000 at some point in 2023 if he remains healthy.
Altuve and Freeman remain among the best in their craft, while McCutchen is past his prime but remains a solid contributor.
All three hitters have something in common: they won an MVP award at one point in their careers.
McCutchen was the first one to win it in 2013, Altuve did it in 2017, and Freeman in 2020.
All of them will have a Hall of Fame case once they decide to hang up their cleats.
They have been among the league’s best hitters for years and are close to a really difficult milestone.
