The St. Louis Cardinals are one of the three teams that were said to be in on Washington Nationals slugger Juan Soto as the trade deadline approaches.
The two sides have been talking about a potential deal, according to Jon Morosi on Twitter.
We even saw John Mozeliak and Mike Rizzo meet in person during the Cards and Nats’ series finale on Sunday.
However, talks hit a snag between the two sides.
Soto is now being dealt to the San Diego Padres.
Morosi tweeted this morning the reason why the talks between the Cardinals and Nationals did not progress further, citing that Washington wanted Dylan Carlson and that the Cardinals were unwilling to trade him away.
The #STLCards have yet to include Dylan Carlson in a multi-player offer for Juan Soto.
Unless that changes in the hours ahead, Soto is likely to become a Padre or Dodger. @MLBNetwork @MLB

Why The Cards Didn’t Land Soto
At the end of the day, it’s really no surprise that the Cardinals are not going to acquire Soto.
While they certainly had the pieces to make the move, this is an organization that has become much more conservative when it comes to dealing their prospects.
Plus, they did not want to deal away Jordan Walker and Masyn Winn, and you can’t blame them for that.
While Walker is a third baseman and Nolan Arenado has that job down cold, there could be an opening at first base after the 2024 season, when Paul Goldschmidt‘s contract is up.
At the end of the day, it would have gone against the model the Cardinals have put together to sustain postseason contention year in and year out.
Their need was for pitching, and they addressed that need already.
The details of the Soto deal to the Padres are not yet known, but the Cardinals and the Dodgers are now officially out on the slugger.
