The New York Mets have been after David Stearns’ services for a long time now.
They heavily considered him for their general manager vacancy but since he was with the Milwaukee Brewers, they ended up bringing in Billy Eppler.
Team president Sandy Alderson said last month that he would step down and move to an advisory role once the Mets find his successor.
With the president and president of baseball operations positions potentially vacant, the Mets could easily accommodate Stearns if he was available.
Stearns announced today that he would be stepping down from his duties as the Brewers’ president of baseball operations.
However, he announced that he will still be tied to the franchise in an advisory role.
He said it himself: he won’t be leaving the Brewers.
Could The Mets Pursue Stearns?
Is Stearns’ future tied to the Mets at some point?
MLB insider Jon Heyman weighed in with some crucial facts.
“Mets (or any other team) would still by rules need permission of Brewers owner Mark Attanasio to interview David Stearns, as he remains under contract 1 more year. Now that he’s a consultant you’d think permission would be granted, but still up to Attanasio,” Heyman tweeted.

It’s not clear whether Attanasio would grant the permission, whether Stearns would welcome leaving this year, or whether the Mets will go after him.
What we do know is that scenario is more amenable for Stearns to look for a new team for 2024, and there is an outside chance it happens for 2023.
He is seen as the architect of a very competitive Brewers team in the second half of the 2010s decade.
He won’t be lacking suitors if he decides to leave.
