The Tampa Bay Rays announced a sizable financial commitment to one of their best pitchers.
Right-hander Tyler Glasnow, who is currently recovering from Tommy John surgery, will now stay in Tampa for two more years instead of one.
“Right-hander Tyler Glasnow and the Tampa Bay Rays are in agreement on a one-year, $25 million contract extension, sources tell ESPN. Glasnow, 29, was set to reach free agency after the 2023 season. Rays will pay him $5.35 million next year as he returns from Tommy John surgery,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan tweeted.

The $25 million salary is expected to kick in for the 2024 campaign.
The Rays, essentially, just bought his first year of free agency.
For a safe $25 million floor and without knowing if he will regain his form following the surgery, it’s a good gamble for the player.
Glasnow Could Return Before The End Of The Season
After missing the entire 2022 campaign to this point, Glasnow appears to be progressing nicely towards a late season return.
Right now, if he doesn’t encounter any setbacks on the way, he could get back in late September.
Can he get in top shape just in time for the Rays’ playoffs?
It remains to be seen, but if it happens, it would be a huge win for the Rays.
They are still a solid team, but you can tell they can use a pitcher like Glasnow in their staff.
They have suffered his absence, as they do not look as sharp as last year.
Glasnow has been throwing live batting practice sessions, and the next step would be going to a minor league rehab assignment.
Perhaps he can help the Rays in some capacity come postseason time, maybe as a reliever.
