Watching MLB reporters break news about Kris Bryant signing with the Colorado Rockies sure shocked more than a few people.
Yes, he had 182 million reasons to go to the mountains, but the most popular reaction among fans and outside observers was not as much “wow” as… “huh?”
The Rockies, who finished fourth in their division last year, share the NL West with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants, the two best teams in baseball in 2021.
Oh, the San Diego Padres, with Fernando Tatis Jr., Yu Darvish, and other stars, play there, too.
What was Bryant thinking, was the fans’ question.
Truth be told, he has earned the right to choose his next destination, and if wanted a low-pressure environment with the urge to compete every year, he picked the right place.
It’s just baffling to see, in reality.
Nobody Understands Both The Rockies And Bryant
Fans think the same way.
“This makes so little sense for both sides. From the Rockies side: Why not keep Arenado? Story? From Kris Bryant’s side: This team is so painfully uncompetitive… why go there? I dunno. Free Agency is weird. This is so weird,” Alex Carr wrote on his Twitter account.

We are talking about a franchise that was trading its best player, Nolan Arenado, a year ago.
We are talking about a team that didn’t even try to retain Trevor Story and Jon Gray over the offseason.
It’s good to see them spend, but the timing, and recent circumstances, make it all weird.
Only time will tell if Bryant and the Rockies will honor their contract.
The most likely outcome, however, is a trade in a couple of years.
