On December 6, MLB will have its first ever draft lottery.
The draft lottery was agreed upon by MLB and the Player’s Association when the new Collective Bargaining Agreement was signed back in March, which effectively put an end to the 99-day lockout.
The lottery will be held in San Diego.
The first six selections of the draft will be determined by the lottery itself.
The NBA also uses a draft lottery to determine who gets the first pick, except it is also used to determine the full order of the draft for teams that miss the postseason.
This year, the MLB Draft took place in Los Angeles during the All-Star Week festivities.

Draft Lottery Set For December 6
The draft lottery represents a changing of the guard of sorts in baseball.
Previously, the order of the draft was determined by record.
The team with the worst record in all of baseball was awarded the first pick in the following year’s draft.
The Baltimore Orioles were that team this year, drafting shortstop Jackson Holliday, the son of MLB legend Matt Holliday, with the first pick.
But going forward, a draft lottery will be used to determine who is awarded the first six picks in the draft.
MLB is joining the NHL and the NBA as one of the three major sports leagues to institute a draft lottery.
The NFL is the only major sports league that has yet to institute a draft lottery.
But this year, MLB will be having its first ever draft lottery to determine who will be awarded the first six picks in the 2023 draft.
