The Detroit Tigers earned a 3-0 win against the New York Yankees on Thursday.
It was more eventful than just a single shutout.
The game featured a pitching duel between Jordan Montgomery (one run allowed in six innings of work) and Michael Pineda (five scoreless frames).
Oh, and it also featured Miguel Cabrera‘s pursuit of his 3,000th hit: he is currently at 2,999 and the next one will have historic implications.
It would have been cool to reach the milestone against the Yankees, but manager Aaron Boone certainly didn’t think so.
With the game 1-0 in favor of the Tigers, Cabrera went to bat in the bottom of the eighth.
There were two outs and two men on base.
Boone, however, opted to award first base to Cabrera via an intentional walk and take his chances against left-handed slugger Austin Meadows.
Southpaw Lucas Luetge was on the mound for the Bombers.
Boone preferred his lefty pitcher to face the lefty-hitting Meadows instead of the righty-hitting Cabrera.
However, it was Meadows the one who hit a double that scored two more runs and turned the game at 3-0.
Not only did Boone’s decision backfire, but he is now public enemy number one in Detroit.
Cabrera Will Get More Chances
Fans booed his decision like there was no tomorrow.
Cabrera, meanwhile, wasn’t nervous, mad, or tense after the game.
To the contrary, he was loose and relaxed.

Fortunately for the Tigers and Cabrera, there is a tomorrow: they will face the Colorado Rockies over the weekend, at Comerica Park.
