For many people who follow the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers, their recent four-game set was a test, a way to know exactly how the two powerhouses fared against each other.
After all, both squads were considered the favorites to play the National League Championship Series before the start of the season, and haven’t disappointed.
The Dodgers took the first two games, on Thursday and Friday; and many Mets fans started questioning their team’s ability to beat elite teams.
The Mets fought back and won the remaining two games in Los Angeles, making a statement in the process.
The reality is that four games aren’t enough to determine whether a team is ready for great things or not.
162 games are a much more appropriate parameter.
The Mets Know Their Priorities
After being asked about the Dodgers series, Mets’ veteran third baseman J.D. Davis gave a clever response.
“J.D. Davis: ‘Hopefully the test is at the end of the year. This was more like a quiz’,” The Athletic’s Tim Britton tweeted, quoting the Mets infielder.

Davis is right: just because they won two straight games against the Dodgers, they aren’t the automatic favorites to win the National League.
The player has some clear priorities: getting to the postseason and actually beating the Dodgers in an October series is one of the biggest goals of the season, not an early-June series.
There is too much baseball to be played anyway; and postseason series often involve an undesirable amount of fortune and randomness, too.
For now, Mets fans should be happy that their team looked competitive during the four-game set.
With health, this team should be a clear contender in the National League.
