The New York Mets universe is still feeling the impact of the Edwin Diaz injury.
Now that there is a diagnosis – a really bad one, with him missing the entire 2023 season – there is eve more disappointment and pain amongst fans.
The dominant reliever will undergo surgery to repair a “full thickness” right patellar tendon tear he suffered while celebrating Puerto Rico’s win over the Dominican Republic on Wednesday night.
Talk about bad luck: one minute, he is hugging his teammates and jumping around in joy.
The next one, he is grimacing in pain, holding his right knee.
It was tough to see, and we imagine it was a thousand times tougher on him.
Mets owner Steve Cohen has to be one of the saddest people in baseball on Thursday, after Edwin and his brother Alexis, of course.
He just lost the best reliever in baseball, a man capable of striking out even the best hitters in the world.
“Edwin Diaz is a great human being and a fierce competitor. All of us at the Mets are shaken but determined to sustain our quest for a great season. We wish Edwin a speedy recovery,” Cohen tweeted.

Diaz saved 32 games last year and pitched 62 innings of a 1.31 ERA and an incredible 118 strikeouts.
He also had an 0.84 WHIP.
There will be no trumpets this year at Citi Field, and that is just heartbreaking.
Hopefully he can come back stronger in 2024, ready for year 2 of his five-year commitment with the team.
He is still young and has the potential to dominate for years, as long as he comes back healthy.
