The New York Mets won 101 games during the regular season, yet couldn’t secure the NL East division and fell to the San Diego Padres in the Wild Card round and went home early.
The premature elimination means that owner Steve Cohen will likely do whatever it takes to retain his own talent and bring in some reinforcements.
The problem is that the Mets have too many good players reaching free agency.
Jacob deGrom is slated to become a free agent, and so is Edwin Diaz.
That’s the foundation of the pitching staff right there.
Additionally, Brandon Nimmo, Chris Bassitt, Adam Ottavino, Seth Lugo, Taijuan Walker, Trevor Williams, Trevor May, Mychal Givens, Joely Rodriguez, Tommy Hunter, and Tyler Naquin are expected to hit the market.
Nimmo in particular is seen as a key cog in the Mets lineup.
He is their leadoff hitter, and a very good one at that.
With a .274/.367/.433 line, 16 home runs, and 102 runs scored, he was an asset at the top of the lineup.
He also played good defense.
Is Trea Turner An Option For The Mets?
Yet, Mets analyst Michael Marino is suggesting an offseason plan that leaves Nimmo off the Mets.
Naturally, Nimmo is expected to pursue a long, lucrative contract but Marino thinks those funds would be better off allocated elsewhere.
“Could the #Mets decide to not bring Nimmo back and instead target Trea Turner? C: Alvarez/Nido; 1B: Pete; 2B: Trea; SS: Lindor; 3B: Esco/Baty; LF: Canha; CF: Marte; RF: McNeil. Would you like this change?” he tweeted.

Turner would be much, much more expensive than Nimmo, but if the Mets can pull it off, they would be adding one of the game’s true superstars.
This season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, he slashed .298/.343/.466 with 21 homers, 27 steals, 101 runs, and 100 RBI.
Turner played 160 of the 162 games for LA, and would be a dream addition to the top of the Mets lineup.
Will the Mets try to bring him to New York?
