New York Mets ace Max Scherzer loves to compete.
That’s why he is a fan of the postseason: it’s the home of competitive, thrilling, high-profile baseball.
One of the most intense competitors ever to step on an MLB mound, Scherzer likes to control every little detail that can help him succeed at the highest level.
You can tell the right-hander is already hyped for Game 1 of the Wild Card series between the Mets and the San Diego Padres.
He will be the one taking the ball for that start.
“Max Scherzer is alone on the mound at Citi Field, hour-plus before the Mets workout, hopping off the mound and throwing to bases. Also appears to be advising grounds crew on how to manicure the mound,” the Washington Post’s Chelsea Janes tweeted.

Scherzer Wants To Be One Step Ahead Of The Competition Every Time
We are not surprised that Scherzer is apparently intense on even the littlest of things, like grounds crew mound work.
This competitive nature is what has made him one of the best right-handed pitchers of his generation; and the owner of three Cy Young awards and a World Series ring.
Probably still mad for losing last weekend’s game against the Atlanta Braves, Scherzer will try to dominate a Padres lineup that is not bad but doesn’t rate as a top unit in the playoffs.
He will get to face former teammate and fellow 2019 World Series champ Juan Soto, and other dangerous hitters such as Manny Machado, Will Myers, Josh Bell, and Jake Cronenworth.
The veteran right-hander finished 2022 with a solid 2.29 ERA in 145.1 frames, overcoming two different bouts of oblique issues in May and September.
