The New York Mets have done a good job of developing young talent over the years.
One of their top prospects over the past few years is catcher Francisco Alvarez.
Not only was Alvarez the Mets’ number one prospect, but he was also the number one prospect in baseball.
This season, Alvarez is getting his first opportunity to play regularly.
He has not disappointed.
Mets ace Max Scherzer has been very impressed with the young catcher.
According to Anthony DiComo, Scherzer said Alvarez is “going to be a great player.”
Max Scherzer is heaping praise on Francisco Alvarez after today's game. Lauded the rookie catcher in particular for his willingness to absorb experiences, ask questions and learn.
"He's going to be a great player," Scherzer said.

Scherzer has spent many years in MLB and has worked with many different catchers.
So his praise for a young catcher like Alvarez is substantial.
Alvarez is not only a very good defensive player, but he is known best for his bat.
This season, the 21-year-old is hitting .252 with eight home runs and 19 runs batted in.
His development into an everyday starter has been great for the Mets.
They came into the season with plenty of question marks at catcher.
Alvarez did not even start the year on the big league team.
But, he is the most talented catcher in the organization and should be in New York for many years.
Alvarez has only played 40 games in his MLB career.
So he still has plenty to learn and gain from more experience.
It will be fun to see Alvarez develop over the years as he is projected to be a multi-time All-Star.
