The Miami Marlins have gotten a lot of criticism in the last few hours after designating Isan Diaz for assignment.
That move meant that all of the players that the Milwaukee Brewers sent to Miami in the Christian Yelich trade (Lewis Brinson, Monte Harrison, Diaz, and Jordan Yamamoto) are no longer with the Marlins.
It’s an official declaration of “losing”.
However, there is no point in holding on to a player that has received multiple opportunities to succeed and hasn’t taken advantage of any of them, so it was ultimately the right move.
The trade, though?
It was a failure, especially since Yelich had two stellar years with Milwaukee essentially right after leaving Miami.
Marlins’ beat writer Craig Mish understands some of the backlash but took some time to analyze each one of the recent trades.
“Last time ! Stanton trade HAD to be done. Huge backloaded contract. Not sustainable in MIA. Ozuna trade – excellent. Yelich deal was a mistake, emotional response to him wanting out. JTR should/could have been extended, a trade that won’t pan out. Time to move on from it all,” he wrote via Twitter.

Rough Trades
Giancarlo Stanton wanted out and only gave the Marlins four teams to negotiate, and two of them couldn’t realistically land him: in other words, the New York Yankees had all the leverage.
The Marlins got Starlin Castro and prospects Jose Devers and Jorge Guzman on that deal.
The Marcell Ozuna trade was the only net positive because it netted Miami one of the best young pitchers in baseball: Sandy Alcantara.
Daniel Castano, Magneuris Sierra and Zac Gallen also came to Miami in that trade, with Gallen later bringing them Jazz Chisholm.
It has been a success.
“JTR” is J.T. Realmuto, and that trade, like Mish says, likely won’t pan out.
Sixto Sanchez is often injured, and Jorge Alfaro is no longer with organization.
Those trades have been rough, all things considered.
