Marcus Semien Made Rare History In A Doubleheader

Texas Rangers star second baseman Marcus Semien has had a tough first year in his new uniform.

He’s hit six homers and driven in 22 runs, but he’s hitting .221.

But he had himself a day yesterday against the Cleveland Guardians, showing his true colors in the doubleheader between the two teams.

Monday night’s series opener between the Rangers and Guardians was postponed due to rain, but Semien sure came ready to play on Tuesday.

In fact, in both games he racked up seven total hits and hit three home runs.

MLB.com insider Sarah Langs tweeted a list of players who have done that on a single calendar day, and let’s just say Semien is in some elite company.

7+ hits, 3 HR on single calendar day, since 1900:

6/7/22 Marcus Semien
7/31/73 Joe Morgan
8/1/72 Nate Colbert (5 HR)
7/26/70 Orlando Cepeda
9/5/61 Lee Thomas (9 hits)
6/28/39 Babe Dahlgren
5/22/30 Lou Gehrig
7/6/29 Jim Bottomley
9/1/1922 Reb Russell

Semien Goes Off

This has to be encouraging for the Rangers.

Semien has not had great luck this season, but yesterday, he gave them a glimpse of the kind of player he really is.

Seven hits in a day and three homers?

That’s unbelievable.

That list he’s a part of now is an all-exclusive list of great players, with guys like Jim Bottomley, Lou Gehrig, Joe Morgan, and Orlando Cepeda.

What a day for Semien.

The only thing that would have made it more impressive is if it came in a single game.

But that doesn’t matter.

He still did all of that in one day.

The Guardians and Rangers split the day-night doubleheader, with Cleveland winning 6-3 in the first game and Texas winning the nightcap by the same score.

But regardless of the outcomes, the story of each of the two games was the performance that Semien put on yesterday.

Perhaps this means he’s finally starting to get hot and ultimately live up to the seven-year deal Texas signed him to.
