When the season began, there were many NBA fans and analysts predicting that this new-look Los Angeles Lakers could go all the way to the Finals.
In fact, there were many betting sites that figured they’d be at least the number two seed in the West.
Of course, none of that came to pass – not even close.
The Lakers are currently ninth in the West with an abysmal record of 27-34.
And as bad as that is, things could get even worse.
The Pelicans have sole possession of 10th place. The Blazers are playing now against the Suns.
New Orleans sits 1.5 games back of the Lakers for 9th.

Andrew Lopez pointed out that the New Orleans Pelicans, currently the 10th seed in the West, are just 1.5 games behind the Lakers for the ninth seed.
There is a very big chance of LA actually being overthrown by the Pelicans, a team that no one thought would even make the playoffs this year.
How much further can the Lakers fall?
Pelicans Passing By
The hits just keep on coming for the Lakers.
They are quickly running out of time to turn their season around and get it together.
There was a time when fans were nervous about the team possibly being the seventh or eighth seed when the playoffs began.
Now they are worried that they might not even make the Play-In Tournament.
According to NBA rules, teams seeded seventh through tenth will have to battle it out to claim their spots in the playoffs.
If that tournament started today, the Lakers would have to go against the Pelicans in hopes of winning and then fighting to grab the lowest spot in the postseason.
That’s a scary thought and one thing makes it even more frightening: the Lakers lost to the Pelicans by 28 points just a few days ago.
