It’s been a very long time since the New York Knicks were considered legit NBA Finals contenders.
And while that’s not the case this season either, there’s a different feel about this Knicks team when compared to some from the past.
Jalen Brunson’s addition was the catalyst they needed.
They have a legit starting-caliber point guard for the first time in ages, and he’s more than capable of getting to his spots and being aggressive on almost every single drive.
Brunson’s play has also brought Julius Randle back to life.
And while RJ Barrett is what he is, and he might never be a star, he’s actually been solid for the Knicks for the better part of the season.
So, after watching them easily handle the Boston Celtics at home, former NBA player Kendrick Perkins thinks that Tom Thibodeau’s team has some serious dark-horse material.
Perkins predicted that the Knicks could actually upset one of the top three seeds in the Eastern Conference in the playoffs, praising Josh Hart’s addition and their competitive spirit.
“I’m not picking the Knicks to win the East; I’m not saying that,” Perkins said. “But I will say this. I wouldn’t be surprised if they upset one of those top dogs from making it to the Finals. I’m talking about Philly, Milwaukee, and the Celtics. I’m telling you, the Knicks got culture, they got foundation, they got guys who are dogs.”

Of course, there will always be concerns about Thibodeau’s adjustments and rotations come playoff time, especially given how much he tends to wear his players out.
But this Knicks team plays with a lot of heart and can never be counted out of any game, and that’s the kind of team you want to avoid in a seven-game series, regardless of home-court advantage or much talent you may have on your side.
