It has been a busy day for the San Diego Padres as we move closer to the trade deadline in MLB.
Before making any moves, however, they secured a top arm for the long term: ace Joe Musgrove agreed to a lucrative extension to stay in San Diego.
“Joe Musgrove’s five-year, $100 million extension with the Padres is complete, per source. @JonHeyman was on it,” MLB’s Mark Feinsand tweeted.

Musgrove, who was scheduled to enter free agency after the season, will now stay in California for at least five more years.
He has been one of the best, if not the best, pitchers in the National League during the 2022 season.
In 18 starts and 115.1 frames, the talented righty has a solid 2.65 ERA, a 3.27 FIP, and 2.6 Wins Above Replacement (WAR) so far.
The Leader Of An Excellent Rotation
He has led a really good Padres rotation as they remain in contention for a playoff spot this year.
Musgrove has been dominant, too, with 114 strikeouts.
Owner of some excellent secondary pitches, he uses them, plus his excellent command, to make up for not-so-great fastball velocity.
He has been dominating for years, and the Padres are apparently sold on his ability to keep getting MLB hitters out on a consistent basis for at least a few more years.
San Diego is now a team to watch in the second half and for the foreseeable future.
They are close to getting star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. back after missing the whole season with a fractured wrist.
As long as Musgrove is healthy and leading the rotation, they could be very, very dangerous come September and October, if they make it to the playoffs like they are projected to.
