The position that Jimmy Garoppolo is in with the San Francisco 49ers as their quarterback is unique.
After coming to San Francisco, and taking them to a Super Bowl, the team would draft Trey Lance in 2021 as his replacement.
While Lance wasn’t the starting quarterback last season, he’s the one expected to get the job this season.
This has made Garoppolo the subject of trade talks since last season.
However, with the quarterback still in San Francisco, and most teams already having the QBs they want, he’s now a unique trade piece for the season.
So what is unique about his situation with San Francisco?
If The 49ers Trade Him, His Playing Time In His New Team’s Training Camp Would Have Limits
Training camp and the NFL preseason are near and time is ticking until they both start.
With him coming off a shoulder surgery, every rep he can get makes a difference.
Per Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet), Jimmy G is expected to be cleared by "mid-August". Jimmy Garoppolo has offseason shoulder surgery and has reportedly been throwing for weeks.

However, he doesn’t have clearance for game action until mid-August.
So while he could see some snaps in training camp, it wouldn’t be much.
This would be because of his recovery timetable and the timeframe that the 49ers make his trade deal.
While he’s someone that can help a team, it’s in his best interest to trade him before training camp begins.
However, missing training camp all together would make things difficult if he’s with a new team this season.
But with him coming off that surgery, maybe there’s a reason everyone is waiting on Jimmy G.
Garoppolo’s Availability Being Set To Mid-August Gives Other Teams Something To Think About
With everyone knowing that Garoppolo is available for trade, but unavailable to play until mid-August, it gives NFL teams things to think about.
The 49ers granted Jimmy Garoppolo's agents permission to seek a trade for him, source confirms, as @AdamSchefter first reported. They are turning to Trey Lance. Garoppolo is returning from offseason shoulder surgery and has a $24.2 million salary for the 2022 season.

Other teams will have a clear picture of their QB situation by that time.
This can be good or bad for Jimmy G, which is why his situation is unique.
If that time frame shows other NFL teams that their current roster of QBs won’t work, it’s a win for Garoppolo.
However, if those teams are happy with the play of their quarterbacks from training camp, and the first game of preseason, that’s bad news.
With this, the 49ers quarterback would need to hope for those other QBs to fail, if he wants that trade call.
His Contract Could Cause Issues With Any Potential Trade Partner
The last unique thing about the San Francisco QB is his contract.
With a payout of $24.2 million, it’s a heavy price tag for a player coming off a shoulder surgery.
It could keep some NFL teams away from him.
However, if San Francisco eats some of that 2022 salary, like the Browns did with Baker Mayfield, it might change things.
While they would lose money for a player they won’t have, they could at least save some money from his large contract.
But it’s all on who wants to get the QB and what the price will be for him.
All these things make the Jimmy G situation a unique one in the NFL.
