Is Jordan Love A Better Option Than Baker Mayfield?

Even after the 2022 NFL Draft, quarterback drama is still going on with Jordan Love and Baker Mayfield.

Everyone knows Mayfield is out of Cleveland after the team got Deshaun Watson.

However, news is coming out from Green Bay about a potential asking price for Love.

The Seahawks and Texans are without proven quarterbacks for this season, leading some to think they might trade for one.

But as of now, they seem content with the quarterbacks they have under center.

However, things always change fast in the NFL.

So which of these two quarterbacks is the better option for any NFL team?

Is Green Bay Putting A High Price On Love?

While Love was a first-round pick, he didn’t go until the later part of the round.

However, Ian Rapoport believes a second or even a third-round pick could be enough to get the young talent.

But after seeing his 2021 performance filling in for Aaron Rodgers, that might be too high of an asking price.

He isn’t a quarterback with a lot of playing time, so taking him would come with risk.

We don’t know what he’s able to do playing a full season like we have seen with Mayfield.

However, he could grow into a starting quarterback if given the chance to play more snaps.

But with his lack of experience, and the potential asking price, it makes him a less desirable option.

Mayfield Might Be Overrated When You Look Closer At His Stats

When you break down Mayfield’s per game performance with a Sam Darnold, you see the two are about the same.

According to Stathead, a side-by-side comparison shows Mayfield as only slightly better than Darnold.

That slightly is a 0.4 difference on some stats like completions and touchdowns per game.

However, the Browns quarterback had more receiving options for himself over Darnold during their time in the NFL.

With that in mind, he’s actually worse than Darnold when you take away players like Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry.

While some believe he’d be an upgrade at quarterback, the numbers don’t lie when you compare apples to apples.

Also, the Browns’ asking price, and Mayfield’s contract, are too high for NFL teams when you examine his stats.

Baker Mayfield would be an upgrade at QB for at least 8 teams. Asking price is a little high, but he’s a starter in the NFL. If he is released by the Browns, there should be at least 5-6 teams calling his agent, if not all 8. (Salary cap depending)

With these factors added in, it pushes things toward Love being the better option.

Final Take

Mayfield has four seasons of NFL experience under his belt.

He’s been the starter for most of the games for Cleveland since arriving in the NFL.

However, most of his success came from good all-round Browns team chemistry and player skill.

He had two great receivers, two good running backs, and a defense with some big-time names.

Love only got to start one NFL game in his career.

However, he has filled in for Rodgers in five other games.

While some people inside the Packers organization are still sold on him, he didn’t impress during 2021.

With all the factors of asking price, contract price, and on-field play, Love gets the edge against Mayfield in two areas.

He is also young and can learn, making him the better option for NFL teams.
