The NFL scheduling geniuses struck gold with this Week 1 matchup between the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers.

It is the head-to-head battle of the Jets’ recent first-round draft picks.

Current quarterback Zach Wilson will be opposite 2018 first-round draft pick Sam Darnold who is now the Panthers starting quarterback.

When asked about his experience with the Jets, Darnold was surprisingly introspective.

He said:

“I feel like, for me, every opportunity I’ve found a way to kind of take advantage of. The Jets was kind of the first time in my life that I got something — and that was taken away from me, for multiple reasons. … I definitely didn’t play good enough in my stint there. And I put it on myself.”

Injured Jets Wide Receivers

New York really wants to turn the page from a dismal 2020 where they finished 2-14.

Under new head coach Robert Saleh and Wilson, the offense wants to get on track and in the end zone.

Wide receiver Jamison Crowder tested positive for COVID-19 on September 5 so his availability is yet to be determined.

Thursday’s injury report added fellow wide receiver Keelan Cole who likely suffered an injury in practice.

Corey Davis has developed good chemistry with Wilson thus far so look for him to receive many targets.

Injured Panthers Wide Receiver

The Panthers have one player on the Thursday injury report.

He is rookie wide receiver Shi Smith who suffered a shoulder injury in the final preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

As always, Christian McCaffrey will be in the backfield to help Darnold ease into his starting role in Carolina.
