How Tim Tebow Can Help The Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars are reportedly signing Tim Tebow.

Tebow, 33, is slated to play tight end for the Jaguars.

The #Jaguars are planning to sign QB-turned-TE Tim Tebow to a 1-year deal, per me and @TomPelissero, a deal that could be official in the next week or so. Nothing done yet. But he’ll have a chance to make the team to reunite with his mentor and college head coach Urban Meyer.

Tim Tebow has not played in the NFL since 2015 when he attempted to make the Philadelphia Eagles roster as the third-string quarterback but was cut after the final preseason game.

Since then, Tebow dabbled in his other athletic love, professional baseball.

He played on the New York Mets minor league teams but never made it to the big leagues; Tebow, coincidentally, announced his retirement from baseball on February 17, 2021.

Many would argue that Tebow would have been an NFL star if he was not so adamant about playing quarterback.

Now that he is choosing to be tight end, let’s talk about how Tebow can help the Jacksonville Jaguars.

It is clear that the Jaguars believe he can.

Tony Khan, Jaguars’ chief football strategy officer, talked about Tebow last week.

“Tim has come in and worked out as a tight end. That’s not a position that we’ve seen him play, but it’s a position that he’s been practicing at with us. So that will be interesting to see how that contributes to us on offense, too. Obviously Urban knows Tim really well and Tim has got a great history of winning. Urban really believes he can help us, and I think it makes a lot of sense. And it’s a position where we need to get better.”

1. Good teammate for rookie Trevor Lawrence

Though he was not the first overall pick as Lawrence is, Tebow was a first-round draft pick by the Broncos in the 2010 NFL Draft.

He understands the pressures associated with the limelight being cast on a young athlete trying to break into the NFL because he lived it.

In addition to understanding and aiding Lawrence as necessary in handling the pressure, Tebow is a former quarterback so he should work well with Lawrence on the X’s and O’s of football also.

2. Good player for Urban Meyer to have on roster

The Jaguars not only have a rookie quarterback, but they also have a rookie coach who happens to be Tebow’s former college coach at Florida.

At 56 years of age, Meyer is making the jump from NCAA to NFL football.

Tebow has a great relationship with Meyer from his Florida days, and he has NFL experience with several teams including the Broncos, Jets, Patriots, and Eagles.

The other side of this coin is how the Jaguars can help Tim Tebow because this looks like a win-win relationship for both parties.

Tebow gets another chance in the NFL.

It is unclear if any other team or situation would have fit Tebow at his age and with absolutely no tight end experience in the NFL; he last played tight end in high school.

He is back at home in Jacksonville, Florida.

No one has seen Tebow on a football field lately so it is unclear what speed and skills he still possesses.

The Jags lack a pass-catching tight end, but it is yet to be determined if Tebow will be on the final 53 man roster on opening day of the 2021 season.

This is just one of many interesting storylines that will be fun to watch as the 2021 NFL season approaches.
