Last week, when MLB had to postpone Game 2 from Thursday to Friday, that move all but eliminated the possibility of the Cleveland Guardians using Shane Bieber in Game 5 should the series make it that far.
Well, the series made it that far and the Guardians are expected to use Aaron Civale with their season on the line on Monday.
There is a considerable chance of rain in the Bronx, so the game starting at its original time, 7 p.m. ET, or being played at all today, are not exactly set in stone.
If, by any chance, the game is moved to tomorrow, there was speculation that the Guardians could make a major change in their rotation that would boost their chances of taking the series considerably.
Civale Is Going To Start Game 5 Either Way
A Guardians insider, however, is putting some cold water to the idea of Bieber starting, either today or tomorrow.
“The league and teams are conferencing at 6pm to reassess the weather situation for tonight. Shane Bieber is not available tonight. That’s a Terry Francona/Carl Willis executive decision. Aaron Civale would still start if the game is pushed to tomorrow,” The Athletic’s Zack Meisel tweeted.

That’s certainly a surprise.
While Civale had a solid 3.23 ERA in his last seven starts, Bieber could be a much more attractive option.
He would still be on three days rest, however, which could be part of the reasoning behind the Guardians opting not to start him.
There is one thing, though: Meisel speaks about Civale making the start today or tomorrow, but according to his tweet, he hasn’t been ruled out for tomorrow in other capacity.
He wrote that Bieber is unavailable tonight, but while he wouldn’t start tomorrow, there could be a scenario in which he takes the ball as an emergency reliever if Game 5 is moved to tomorrow.
