Entering the game in the top of the ninth inning, Holmes had a 3-0 lead and was three outs away from finishing it off and getting Gerrit Cole win No. 9 on the season.
However, it was not meant to be, as the Cincinnati Reds pulled off a stunning comeback and ultimately won the game by a final of 4-3 and took the opener of the series.
But after the game, Cole made sure to make it clear that he wasn’t concerned about Holmes, knowing he’s been dominant all season long.
SNY tweeted a video of Cole’s interview.

Cole Defends Holmes
It’s good to see Cole sticking up for his teammate and not throwing him under the bus.
He knows how dominant Holmes has been and that the Yankees would not be here without him.
He just had one bad outing, and Cole correctly pointed out that every pitcher is going to have a bad outing from time to time.
Cole knows that better than anybody.
He’s been around the game for a long time and knows that baseball is a game of ebbs and flows.
Holmes had to learn that the hard way last night, but he’s still one of baseball’s most dominant relievers and is a guy the Yankees have leaned on heavily this year.
Cole ultimately went seven innings without allowing a run last night, while Holmes failed to even record one out.
But the Reds didn’t quit and ultimately pulled out the win.
Cole understands that blaming Holmes isn’t the way to go and instead did the right thing by sticking up for his teammate.NEXT: MLB Fans Remember A Legendary Babe Ruth Milestone
